Thousands of people pack Rupp Arena for each University of Kentucky home basketball game. In an interview recorded in 1971 and housed at the University of Kentucky library and publicized in July month by the Louisville Courier-Journal, Rupp described the university administration's pressure on him to integrate the team in the 60s and blamed his failure on a variety of external factors. And his white Kentucky teams did play against integrated teams when some other Southern schools refused. He reportedly asked ushers to remove fans who yelled racial slurs. Some Kentucky fans and people who knew Rupp point out that he did try to recruit several Black players over the course of the 1960s, some of whom neared a commitment to play for Kentucky, but ultimately changed their minds. The suggestion that the school drop the Rupp name is not new, and the AAAS faculty's demand has resurfaced old arguments in defense of Rupp. "Rupp developed a reputation as someone who did not want Black players on his team," Gabriel says. In his final season, he coached an additional two Black players who temporarily walked on from the football team and combined for a total of just 48 minutes over the entire season. Rupp fielded exclusively white teams from his first season in 1930 until his second-to-last season in 1970, when he finally started his first Black player, a 7-foot center named Tom Payne. Rupp developed a reputation as someone who did not want Black players on his team. "But he was and still is criticized for not recruiting African-Americans into his program until the last couple of years of his career." "Rupp was the man who built Kentucky basketball into sort of an iconic program," says Dick Gabriel, a longtime Kentucky sports broadcaster. The demand has gotten more attention than the others on the faculty's list because Kentucky basketball is so big, and because it has no bigger name than Adolph Rupp. The demand to change the name of Rupp Arena is last on the list.ĭerrick White, a history professor in the department who helped write the letter, says the name change is important because the arena is "the most recognizable building on our campus to not only the people here, but across the country and even across the globe if they're basketball fans." The demands include requiring that undergrads take a course on race and inequality, appointing more Black faculty to leadership positions, and minimizing the school's relationship with municipal law enforcement. The letter, sent in June and published in late July, outlines the challenges faced by Black students, staff, and faculty at the University of Kentucky. "The Adolph Rupp name has come to stand for racism and exclusion in UK athletics and alienates Black students, fans, and attendees," write the faculty of the African-American and Africana Studies department in a letter sent to the university's president. Even in the segregated South, Rupp's record stands out from his peers in high-power college basketball. Over his entire career at Kentucky, Adolph Rupp signed just a single Black player, beginning with his first season in 1930 through his retirement in 1972. Its name celebrates Rupp's success on the basketball court, success that can be counted in any number of ways: four national titles, five Coach of the Year awards or, simply, 876 wins - the most ever by any coach when he stepped down, and still the second-most all these years later.įor some, there's a more important number: One. The arena has borne Rupp's name since it opened in 1976, just a few years after his retirement.īut now at U.K., a list of demands from the school's African-American and Africana Studies faculty has brought new life to an old debate about the name of the school's basketball arena. Rupp Arena is named for Adoph Rupp, the famous University of Kentucky basketball coach whose sustained success in the mid-20th century turned the program into the powerhouse it remains today. Now the campus is debating whether that name should be changed. The Kentucky Wildcats have dominated the competition playing at Rupp Arena, named after U.K.'s most famous coach: Adolph Rupp. The price of palladium used in their device rose 30% and the USSR minted a palladium coin. If we can solve fusion, we’ve solved climate change and greenhouse gases forever. The promise of fusion of hydrogen atoms has come and gone over the last 40 years, with headlines being made in science once again. It would contrast starkly with the “hot” fusion that is known to take place naturally within stars and artificially in hydrogen bombs which leave radiation behind. Of course if you can play new levels for Contraption Maker by downloading them, you’re allowed to make new levels as well. The puzzles are what the main game is, and the contraptions are more of the Rube Goldberg machines that just are a spectacle of items haphazardly thrown together that work in concert with each other to make a mundane operation look extraordinary. There’s also a section to download new puzzles or contraptions. Think you’ve got something special? You can record your solution and share it. Each level has more than one way to complete a level, but there is a common way of achieving that goal. You’ll be using balls to hit scissors to cut ropes, directing mice via cheese wedges to activate switches, and. As expected, levels require to think differently as they get convoluted across the three difficulties: easy, medium, and hard. Special considerations must be made for some patients depending on quality of fixation/bone, pain, edema, work requirements, or psychosocial factors. The key is to mobilize the wrist aggressively (as pain allows) the first few weeks to avoid scar adhesions, reduce swelling, and minimize stiffness. In general, patients who undergo a distal radius ORIF have great outcomes with minimal complications. Not too long ago, these patients would have been casted for 4-6 weeks and been extremely stiff afterwards, with long recoveries likely. Due to the advancements in surgical techniques, we are now mobilizing distal radius ORIF’s 3-5 days after surgery. This is likely the most common post-surgical diagnosis I see, especially with the winters we have here in Minnesota. In regards to post-surgical carpal tunnel releases (and actually all post-surgical diagnoses), it is important to read the operative report in detail prior to treatment. However, I tend to see more orders for post-surgical treatment than conservative. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (Conservative & Post-Surgical)Ĭarpal tunnel syndrome is in the top 5 most common diagnoses I see. It is by no means an exhaustive list, but hopefully will provide you with a direction to take when seeing an unfamiliar diagnosis. This article will focus on common diagnoses seen in hand therapy (and possibly in your setting) with typical hand therapy interventions and treatment protocols in an easy to read list form. What is really exciting about hand therapy (but also challenging at times) is how many different “road maps” exist for treating the same diagnosis since each patient presents with unique problems and issues. The plan is built from a thorough understanding of protocols, personal experience, and collaboration with fellow hand therapists. Regardless of how simple or complicated the diagnosis or treatment plan, I try to have a “road map” in my head planned out. The same is true for me now when treating a patient in my hand therapy setting. I quickly learned in graduate school (in my physiology and neuroscience courses) that I learn best with flow charts – when I can form a plan and visualize what steps come next. One can not carry his own body weight without drugs, and the other still has peak human strength even without his metal form. Judging by the limitations of the 1610 Colossus' abilities, there's basically no contest between him and the 616 one. And just like in the comics, he's able to singlehandedly take on Juggernaut. The Colossus of the Deadpool movies however, played by Stefan Kapicic, is practically a carbon copy of the 616 iteration, with a thick Russian accent, ring-segment plating, and a heart that's a little too sweet for his own good. His skin is a smooth metal, and it's highly likely this inspired his design in Ultimate X-Men. He's depicted as strong, but his role is very minor, so it's a little difficult to determine exactly how strong he really is. The Colossus of the original Bryan Singer-directed X-Men movies, played by Daniel Cudmore, bears little resemblance to his traditional comics counterpart. And while the 616 version is vulnerable to adamantium attacks, the ultimate Colossus is actually impervious to them, though this could just be chalked up to 1610 adamantium being considerably weaker than 616 adamantium. Instead, he derives his strength from the substance Banshee, a drug that enhances mutant powers. More importantly, he actually doesn't possess super-strength as one of his superpowers, so at first, his metal form was so heavy that he couldn't even move it. Starting from a purely aesthetic standpoint, his metal skin lacks the segmented rings of the classic Colossus design, much like his appearance in the Bryan Singer movies. Though sharing the same name as his 616 counterpart, the Colossus of the Ultimate X-Menbooks (part of the Marvel 1610 universe) actually has a vastly different relationship to his mutant abilities. Both adamantium and vibranium can puncture his mysterious metal tissue, which means Wolverine's claws, Black Panther's suit, and especially Captain America's shield (a vibranium-adamantium alloy) could easily best him in combat. While this plating makes him nearly indestructible, he still has a few weaknesses. It's not just a shell over his body, either- it fully replaces his skin, bone and muscle fibers when his mutant abilities are activated. The metal in his system is undefined, but it's said to have nearly identical properties to carbonite steel. colossal.Ĭolossus first emerged in Giant Size X-Men #1 (by Len Wein, Dave Cockrum and Peter Iro), first exhibiting his powers by blocking an unmanned oncoming tractor with his body. Between the classic universe, the Ultimate universe, and the varied depictions of the movies, let's see which Colossus is the most. Piotr Rasputin, AKA The Colossus, is typically acknowledged as the strongest mutant of the X-Men, but the limits of his strength vary heavily from one portrayal to the other. We’re not funded by a billionaire oligarch or an offshore hedge-fund. ‘Oligarchy’ has become associated mainly with Russia and its cabal of wildly wealthy men and their families, enriched by theft from the country’s people and resources thanks to their always-precarious membership in Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. The UK doesn’t fit squarely into any of those sub-categories, but has inched towards some characteristics since 2019. This brings Russia to mind, where the President and Prime Minister have simply changed places every few years, though the electoral aspect feels curiously familiar. Then there’s electoral autocracy, which looks like democracy at a glance, but institutions and norms are a cosplay façade, authoritarian methods prevail, and electoral processes are short on fairness and freedom. How far along?Ī subspecies of representative democracy called ‘electocracy’ gives a government almost total power citizens vote for it but cannot participate directly in its decisions a sub-sub-species, totalitarian democracy, is a more extreme version. This tips us along the scale towards oligarchy. That party has just, for the second time in four years, chosen its leader – and thus the Prime Minister – via an opaque system allowing unknown foreign elements a vote, or perhaps multiple votes.įor these and a myriad of other reasons, while we nominally have a democratic system, it cannot be said to be representative by any means. 32 million people voted, on a turnout of 67.3% of the registered population, 13.9 million for the Conservatives (29.2% of the registered population). But the Conservatives won an 80-seat majority in 2019 via only 43.6% of the popular vote. ‘Democracy’ means ‘rule of/by the people’, and is of course the representative system we have, in the strict sense. So, what and where are we nowadays: a democracy, an oligarchy, or somewhere in between? (The commonly-used word ‘fascism’ also doesn’t apply, as it’s a belief system, whereas fascism-like actions are increasingly taken here simply to enable other things). Some may say this echoes the current UK situation given what’s happened to accountability and transparency in recent times, but we’re really talking about a Sultan of Brunei-type situation there. Autocracy is when unlimited political and social power rests with one individual or polity, who or which is above the law and any means of being held to account besides violent outbreaks. We can rule out the first, as the UK isn’t a non-hierarchical country without laws. Let’s take the four primary forms of governance: anarchy, autocracy, democracy and oligarchy. Bear in mind that not all of these terms are mutually exclusive. It’s necessary to examine the source of power defined by each label, then how and by whom power is wielded, for what purpose. In the interests of personal responsibility and a commitment to the truth as it used to be known, I’ve explored terms of use and held them up against our country’s leadership team to see how well, or ill-fitting, they are. Mea culpa: I’ve flung about terms like ‘kleptofascist’, without knowing if they’re even real words, let alone accurate descriptors. That includes how we talk about our Government, old and ‘new’. Words don’t seem to mean what they used to.Īt such a time, language should matter more than ever to those who don’t wish to play this dangerous game. One of the most disconcerting aspects of existence today, running as the subtext below a once-in-a-century pandemic, a re-emerging nuclear weapons threat, and an existential economic crisis, is that truth is subjective.
